Niche Site Challenge 003: Keyword Research

keyword researchIn the last post (Finding Profitable Niches), I showed you ways and techniques of how I go about finding and gathering niche ideas.

I start by writing a list of 10 passion. Then I create a list of 10 potential problems to those passions. Then I create 10 tips, advice, and solutions to those problems. I then finish by taking the top 5 of all three lists and create a Research list.

Now that I have a list of top 5 keywords terms, it’s time to do some good ol’ keyword research.

Keyword Research

There’s a few things you want to keep in mind when doing your keyword research. First is to look for keywords that have a good amount of search volume and second, look for ones that have low competition. This will help in ranking in google.

I’ll show you how I do this with a tool called Market Samurai. Now you don’t need this tool for your keyword research. I use it because it helps me speed up the whole process. What would have taking me hours and hours if not days to do, I can do it in a matter of minutes with Market Samurai.

I made a video for this post just to change this up a bit. In this video I show you how I did my keyword research.

(right click to download HD version -121.5 MB)

Ok so that’s pretty much it. That’s how I do my keyword research. It’s the easiest way I know how. There maybe other methods and techniques, but this one is what I use.

And thanks to Market Samurai, I did it fairly quick and easy with it.

Again, for the record, you DO NOT have to use this tool. There are many tools out there that can do this. For example, you can just use google search engine to search for your competition. And you can use googles keyword tool for your keyword research. There’s also a tool called SEO Quake that allows you to gather some data like page rank, alexa ranking, etc.

For me, it’s just a hell of a lot easier to do all this in one spot.

Here’s a list of other free sources and tools you can use:

  • Google (to research competition)
  • Google Keywords Tool (for keyword research)
  • SEO Quake (thanks to Dani Sisel for recommending it)
  • SERP Attacks (Thanks to Jeff Hopp for recommending it)
  • if you know of any other tools we can use, let me know in
the comments below and I’ll update and post them here ;-)

Quick recap on the video

First you start out by doing keyword research on your main keyword term. What you want to do is find other related keyword terms. You analyze the keywords and narrow it down to just a few that you want to target.

Then do the same keyword research for the new keyword terms to see if you come up with better keywords.

This is also a great way to come up with content ideas for your niches. It’s the best way to rank higher with a specific keyword term if you actually have content that’s highly relevant to the actual keyword term.

Now that we got that out of the way, it’s time for my favorite part …Building the niche site ;-)

In the next post I’ll actually be building the niche site and going through some of the plugins and tools I use to optimize my site. I’ll also go over some tips and tricks I use to finding good quality and highly relevant content to create for my niche site.

Alrighty then, I guess I’ll c-ya in the next post.

Keyword Research Ideas:

Ok so I know that there’s a ton of ways to do keyword research. If you got any tips, tools, or tricks that you know, feel free to share them in the comments below.

  1. Hey Joey,

Really cool tool man (Market Samurai) I already own it and honestly, I haven’t seen anything better than MS.

Wordtracker was a good contender but I also happen to do Market Research in other languages (Spanish) and as far as I understand, Wordtracker can’t do it yet, so MS was the obvious choice for me.

For keyword research I mainly go to places like what’s hot in Alexa, ebay’s top sellers, Amazon top sellers, then I do a few queries inside YouTube (my second ‘Google’) and after that I create a set of keywords and feed those into Market Samurai.

And then I start the whole market research inside.

It’s really the same stuff, we just need to have different seeds.

    Sergio

PS. There are people that do the same but with Clickbank products but they use CBEngine as their “Google” and then play around with those keywords.

    • Joey Kissimmee says:

yeah, Alexa, eBay, and Amazon are great places to get keywords. I recently started doing more research on Amazon since I’m getting in that space now. I also use CBEngine but only to find good products that aren’t heavily saturated. I haven’t tried Wordtracker yet. I might look into it. And on youtube, I only use it to find keywords for my videos. A little trick I use to rank my videos high ;-) I should make a video on that huh, lol.

  2. dani walker says:

Thanks for mentioning my name. SEO Quake has been great in helping me choose keywords to target. Love the information you are sharing and looking forward to starting my own niche site as well.

  3. Hi
This is awesome post & I will use them.

    Thanks For Sharing
    -Abhishek

  4. Barry Huddleston says:

I enjoyed this one too. In the mean time I’m building a site right along with you. It will be cool to find how you plan to monetize these niche sites.

  5. Paul Warner says:

Quite frankly Market Samurai has been around a long time and you could have gone slower, as far as I am concerned, because I do believe you have to get some kind of keyword software to make doing this easier and since you are an authority on this, it would be valued information. I know there is Micro Niche Finder and Keyword Elite out there and those pushing those two pieces of software say their product is better than Market Samurai, which is natural considering it is what they are selling. Just wondering if you had made any comparisons before you did get Market Samurai.
As for the purpose of the video I have to tell you to see this stuff done out of the goodness of your heart to help us because any information pertaining to niche sites is what I am interested in, and my mind is open to whatever you can teach us about it, so I personally thank you for myself. Paul

    • Joey Kissimmee says:

Hey Paul as far as comparing those tools to MS, I really can’t say much. Because I’ve never used them. To be honest before market samurai, the tools I used was Google search engine and Google keyword tool.

I was going to use them again for this challenge but then I remembered the work it took to gather all the info I needed. So I posted on my facebook for any recommendations and nearly everyone said to get MS, so I did. Those other ones did come up but not as much.

I’m a firm believer in getting highly recommended stuff. Not just cause you say it’s the best, but cause you actually use it yourself. If I didn’t like it I would probably have went back to doing it the old way.

I’m not one to be buying tons of stuff just to see which ones work. It’s a waste of time, energy, and money. I use to do that and man I dumped tons of $$$ that way.

Anyway, hope this helps and thanks for your feed back.

  6. Very true.. Most “good” traffic that converts will end up coming from long tail keywords or referrals. The super competitive keywords don’t mean a whole lot when you can get very good targeted traffic by using some long tail phrases.

  7. I will have to try this on my blog. Time to try something new since I am doing a couple of post outside of my blog. Great review, it has convinced me to give a try.

  8. I’ve been looking for an alternative to google keywords. This is great as I just started using wordpress. I can’t wait to check out this, looks like it makes seo a lot easier.

  9. Joey, I think you have convinced me. I know there is a lot of information out there about SEO that I still need to learn. I have grown tired of paying for people to do my SEO work who don’t know what they are doing so I have committed to learning myself. Thanks for this tip.

  10. Very nice post indeed Joey, Is Market samurai Free ?

  11. Is there any other tool similar to market samurai?

    • Joey Kissimmee says:

yes I’m sure there are many like it. I posted a few in this post, and also some of the commenters here recommended a few other. You can also do a quick search on google to see any reviews or comparisons anyone might have done.

  12. Thanks so much for the tips you giving here. One quick question. I have an existing blog already, not much traffic but am looking to improve on it. Can I use your techniqeus and market samurai for my current blog?

    • Joey Kissimmee says:

Oh most definitely yes. You can use them for your current blog. If fact I believe it ill work better since your site would be index already. The site and url are aged a bit so things will go alot faster.

At least that’s my opinion ;-) Anyway yeah, try it out and let us know your results. Thanks

  13. You know when keyword research is important, when you need to find buying keywords, which is pretty much every article or post.

    Interesting suggestion.
    Thanks
    John

  14. Thanks for sharing this with us Joey. Awesome content with no fluff and all that junk. You have a good heart (-:

  15. SERP attacks has a good free version that is useful for keyword research, analyzing competition and even checking backlinks.

  16. Joey… a couple of points your idea for a niche… I like how you think! As for market samurai, it’s a must have, in my view! This is an enjoyable series you are doing.

    • Joey Kissimmee says:

Thanks Sean. Glad you’re enjoying it. I’m having a blast doing it and also this gives me great opportunities to fill my blog with great content ;-) oh and YES, market sam is a must have tool in any marketers arsenal.

  17. Hello,

I do not quite understand what is the indicator ‘PBR’

    Patrick

    • Joey Kissimmee says:

What pbr (phrase to broad ratio) does is tell you the percentage of people actually searching that specific keyword in that exact order. EX: “how to build a poker table”.

When you search a keyword phrase, google tends to spit out all sites containing all the words in that phrase, which makes it hard to figure out your exact number of competition.

This is how it was explained to me, it made sense so why not right, lol. Anyway, hope this helps.
