JesNemitz, no one said that this performance was original; he said Mr. Cook was one of the most original perfomers on the show. He is original in that he had shown the innate ability to think or express himself in an independent and individual manner that reflects his creative thinking and ability. That is, most contestants on American Idol will sing a straight cover and neither seek out nor have the ability to create alternatives to fit their personal style. Therefore, in this respect, Cook may be credited as being the “most original” of the contestants over the many weeks he was on the show as he consistently rose to or exceeded every challenge presented to him. Though this arrangement was appropriately credited on the show to Mr. Cornell just prior to his performance (though a big Cornell fan, I prefer Mr. Cook’s interpretation of that arrangement to be honest), Mr. Cook did perform many of his own, original arrangements of several songs, including most memorably, Always Be My Baby, Little Sparrow, All I Really Need Is You, The World I Know and Dream Big to name a few. Hope that helps put into context the ‘most original contestant’ comment made by Randy.
Fantastic performance by an incredible artist. David was brilliant, absolutely brilliant and I have to say that I was happy to see that even Simon could appreciate the artistry behind this performance.
Why is everyone talking about him being original? This is nowhere near original. This is basically a cover of a cover. This is EXACTLY like the Chris Cornell version and he’s been doing it like this for I don’t know how many years. WAY before David Cook. Musical Illiterates who think that they know everything. You can thumbs down this comment, but the truth won’t change. This is NOT original in any way shape or form whatsoever.

About 2 seconds before this slip starts, Ryan specifically mentions that he’s singing Chris Cornell’s version. Anyone that thought Cook made this up is just an idiot
Well, not that long before David Cook. This was in 2008 I think? Cornell’s album with this song on it came out a year before it. And there are differences, just enough to qualify as “original.” But definitely yeah he got way the hell more credit than he deserved.
But then again, this is Simon Cowell we’re talking about. He apparently had never heard of Rage Against the Machine or Killing in the Name before the X-Factor campaign last year.
Oh, Timmy- – I wasn’t aware Chris needed any “doing”. David deserves credit for his performance, & not compared to Chris’. I think they’re both great, just different. And, yes, I’ve heard of all the groups you mentioned & my favorite is still Pearl Jam & Eddie Vedder- – OH MY!, OH MY!!

I don’t mind the audience as much as the judges. Like the other fans of the original song. Nothing brave at all about this.

you are sing faster
David Cook put Chris Cornell on the map
what are you 12, gnaarly. Never heard of soundgarden, temple of the dog, audio slave. David cook did nothing for cornell.
